Licking the Sky

it was a sad indictment or
perhaps a cause of celebration

not releasing his early paintings
although he was not without talent

he juggled his paint like thoughts
never in need of certainty

occasionally a reflective sad lilt
sifted through primordial moods

emptying the deformed baggage
but one must maintain reverence

the splintering flames, the undertones
reappear half robed licking the sky

spiraling/ weighing his heavy heart in hand
against the feather of his guitar like voice

'are you worthy of passage?' his hair pasted
flat, his vital organs placed in canopic jars
