a poem by J.J. Campbell

the old man ponytail

went to a john prine
concert last night

john was in fine form
two straight hours of
storytelling

what was interesting
were the old souls in
attendance

the look on their
faces

the clothes

the old man
ponytail

men and women
interested in nostalgia
in a theater setting

while i was there
because these were
songs that have
remarkably kept me
from putting a gun to
my head or a knife
in my soul

i treat miracles like
that with reverence

which is probably
silly in its own way

but as the pain rises
as easily as the sun

i'm becoming more
aware that i most
likely won't get to
enjoy nostalgia any
time soon
