a poem by Michelle Hartman

literary affair

you asked me if I wanted
some of your poems
for a journal I edit
probably despaired I would ever
get around to reading and choosing
but I wanted to wait for an uninterrupted
time when I could take off
my clothes and roll your words
cuddle them to my breasts

you who so love women
not just the sex of us but our
laugh, shape and sharpness of spirit
place each of us on a pedestal
only to coax us back down with sly blue Irish eyes
and now sated by your words I am
refreshed as an afternoon
spent in an experienced lovers arms
and I do not want to publish
your poems
it would be like showing
off snapshots of an affair
