EMILY AS A BREAK IN SPEAKING SILENCE

Like a dress, slipped
to the floor without
the effort of gravity,

the unmiraculous
period of our trouble,
the anger of two people

with no room to run away,
no want to run away,
is to challenge each other

with real weaponry,
with mistakes, years
of mistakes opened up

during a grocery trip.
To claim victory
in a skirmish, sometimes

we can only oust
the criminals of old wars,
the schadenfreude of which

proves only
that the sacredness,
sometimes, is only survival.
