a poem by George Anderson

When the Wheels Fall Off

Put on a comedy
to help you forget
who ripped off your
home & life savings.

Put on a comedy
to help you forget
who caused this
economic crunch.

Put on a comedy
to help you forget the
banking executives &
financial advisers &
real estate brokers who
were paid obscene salaries
& fees to fuck things up.

Put on a comedy
to help you forget the
company executives who
raised ridiculous levels of
debt against dodgy assets
which could never be repaid.

Put on a comedy
to help you forget the
charlatans who are lining
up right now to offload their
blame onto others, their sad sack
excuses of having
the wrong business plan
& how no one could see
this crisis coming.

Put on a comedy to
help you forget why
you are powerless
why you have no real
say in the system.
How even after the CEOs
fucked up our world
economy. How their
former companies
have had to be bailed out
using massive taxpayer
funds. How these same
hopeless morons have been
paid hundreds of millions
of dollars of our
hard earned money
in bonuses.

Put on a comedy
to help you forget
your bank balance.
To help you forget
where you keep the
keys to your gun locker.
To help you forget why
you can never retire.
