a poem by Michael Ashley

Rough Hands

against metal
firing
the antique
Smith & Wesson
again
& again
the old-fashioned way

bullets
glass
powder
thick
in the air

Billy grasped
his knife
its enamel
handle
cold in his hand

ran the blade
clean across
the gunman's
windpipe

old rough hands
never took
his hat off

they
buried
him in it
