a poem by Karl Koweski (2 of 2)

when the axe entered the forest

the trees said
see there...
the handle is one of us

so the Yoruba proverb goes

"hope" and "change"
the new hatchets
chopping chunks from
the fallen tree
of liberty

no different
than the words
that have come before

patriotism
sacrifice

we're just
juggling letters
now

better
to wipe away
the alphabet

and invent
a new language
altogether
