a poem by Shannon Quinn

Words

Each one rehearsed
Red-faced
Raised heartbeat
Elusive butterfly breaths
I doubt myself
My motives
My mind
Even now
In the beyond of a drunken life
Each word is a carefully constructed fiction.
My self-directed imperatives
A brutality of will.
I meant my promises when I made them
I want you to believe that.
